Metric Expectations for Email Marketing Campaigns

phone sending email 150x150 Metric Expectations for Email Marketing CampaignsOne question that frequently comes up when discussing email marketing campaigns is: what are reasonable results to expect? Results can typically vary widely.  Fortunately, Silverpop recently did research on this subject and I know that many of you will be interested.  The results are based on random sample sets of 7,000 email messages delivered to recipients in the U.S., the U.K., and Germany.  The best part of their data is instead of giving the usual average rates they also included the median as well as the top quartile and bottom quartile.  This will allow you to get a better idea where you might place, and where to put you focus to improve your results.

Will Social Media Replace Email?

Happy Girl with a toyThat question seems to pop up like a defective toy that my kids used to play with – over and over the little bugger would keep popping up no matter what.

I really don’t understand why it has to be an either/or question.  If you really stop and give the issue some thought that exceeds a couple of nano seconds, then you realize that maybe both can be used effectively.  Which is exactly what was shown in a number of recent studies.

Integrated Lead Generation – Part 8: Not-So-Final Thoughts

dejectedThis is one of those topics that could easily have twice as many posts, but I think that eight is enough.  Hey, that might make a good name for a TV show – oooohhh now I’m dating myself.

One topic in this series that has only received passing mention is email marketing.  That should clearly be a component of any good lead generation program and I have written about in the past – Tips for Effective Email Marketing Campaigns, Email Marketing: Getting & Keeping Subscribers, and Increase Sales with Marketing in Transactional Emails.  Feel free to take a look at those articles.

Increase Sales with Marketing In Transactional Emails

ParasailingFor those that might not be familiar with the term, transactional emails are typically sent to existing customers with information regarding their order process – order confirmation, shipping info, etc.  With a lot of companies these are simply text emails sent from customer service or someone else in your company.  By adding a marketing message or offer these can provide BIG opportunities for up selling and/or cross-selling, and you will start to soar above your competitors.

At the very least, these emails should include your corporate logo and tag line consistent with your website and other corporate marketing communications.  A disconnect between a well designed website experience and a text-based email can do damage to your brand reputation, especially with new customers.

Email Marketing: Getting & Keeping Subscribers

Email Road Stripe

Everyone knows that email marketing is the least expensive and most effective form of online marketing available – right?  It’s been proven to be helpful regardless of the size of your business.  Yet, according to an Epsilon and ROI Research study, 55% of e-mail subscribers in the U.S. and Canada unsubscribe occasionally and 14% do so frequently.  Sometimes it can be a tough road.  So what gives?  Why are there such high rates of unsubscribers?

Fortunately, the same study asked the reasons that internet users unsubscribe from permission-based emails.  Here’s what they found:

Does Social Media Marketing Increase Sales?

Diving into Enfield pool

The usual answer to that question is – it depends.  That’s a good answer because it does depend on proper planning and goal-setting before diving in to the deep end, or tip-toeing into the shallow end.  Slapping together a Facebook page and asking someone (anyone?) in your company to start twittering won’t cut it.
