Should Customer Service be a Given?

In the interest of full disclosure I have to admit that customer service is a pet peeve of mine.  Let me clarify, I expect excellent customer service from myself, where I work, and where I do business.  This subject has come up lately because of comments my wife has made about some episodes of not-so-great customer service where she works.

ESPN has just released the standings of all 122 MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL teams.  What’s so newsworthy about that you ask?  Well, they rated all of those teams on eight key factors in giving their fans the ultimate sports experience.  Does that sound anything like what every company tries to do – give their customers the ultimate experience so that they keep coming back and continue doing business with them?  You betcha!

You Can’t Throw Customers in the Air

Remember when you were a child and you learned to trust your Dad to throw you into the air…and then catch you?  You just knew that he would catch you – even though you were scared.  Or, maybe you have small children of your own now, and you play the same game with them.  But, at first the trust isn’t quite there is it?  The trust has to be earned, right?

Joy in the Workplace During a Recession

Joy at WorkDeep into the worst recession most of us have seen – and I’ve personally been through at least three of these, not counting this doozie – I would like to suggest we look for some ways to add a little (Ok, a lot) of joy at work.  I came across Dennis Bakke and his book, Joy at Work: A Revolutionary Approach to Fun on the Job, a few years ago when everything was going just peachy.  I thought it was a very provocative book back then and I just dusted it off and got it down from my bookshelf; and it’s still a very interesting read.
